Coming to Rawls Creek Park

The Crossbuck Play Space: Irmo’s first inclusive playground

A youth-guided, community-built play space at Rawls Creek Park (1113 Friarsgate Blvd.) where children, teens, adults and seniors of every ability can play together. Its railroad theme (a crossbuck is the X-shaped railroad-crossing sign) echoes Irmo’s start as a railroad town.

  • Who’s behind it: The Door Home, Friends of Rawls Creek Playground, the Friarsgate Neighborhood HUB, Universal Outreach Church of God in Christ and the Town of Irmo.
  • Designed with kids: In August 2025 a two-day “Come Play with Us” design workshop at the Saluda Shoals River Center brought architects together with a Junior Design Team of young people, ages 5 to 22, and disability advocates.
  • What’s planned: a secure perimeter fence, inclusive swings, slides and musical play, an interactive “wonderwall,” bright active areas and quiet nature spots, shaded seating where caregivers can see the whole space, and smooth, accessible surfacing.
  • The Town’s part: Council passed a resolution of support in January 2025 and committed about $140,000 for site prep, benches, irrigation and landscaping. Equipment and construction are being raised privately.
  • The goal: organizers are working to raise an initial $500,000 to start construction, aiming to open by summer 2027.

Gifts go to the Crossbuck Play Space at Rawls Creek Park Fund at Central Carolina Community Foundation.
