Serve on a State Board

South Carolina runs on hundreds of citizen boards, from the Board of Education to the Arts Commission. Most seats are unpaid and filled by appointment, and many sit empty. Here is every board on file with the Secretary of State, with the seats that are open right now.

How to apply

Interested in a seat?

  1. Governor’s seats: fill out the Governor’s online interest form. Questions: 803-734-3146 or appointments@governor.sc.gov.
  2. Legislature’s seats: contact your state senator or representative. Many are chosen by a county’s legislative delegation. Find yours.
  3. Other seats: these are named by an agency, association or the board itself. Contact the board directly.
  4. Expect background and financial checks, and for many boards a Senate committee hearing. It can take six months to a year.
